This is such a great list of plants! And I am truly envious of the containers here. Really really beautiful design. Thank you for sharing your process!
This is absolutely brilliant and the effect is gorgeous. You have inspired me to adapt your planting scheme to a difficult area of our garden that never quite worked. Thankyou for sharing how to turn a blank area into something beautiful.
This has inspired me to work on my collection of pots on the terrace outside my kitchen! I absolutely agree that it’s better to buy vintage galvanised pots - the modern versions last no longer than about three years. I’ve just had to throw four of them away, the bottoms had fallen away with rust.
That's so wonderful to hear, Clare. I'm honoured. Thank you! Yes we made that mistake too, they've all now found their way to the local recycling centre metal bin! Absolute trash.
So beautiful and helpful yet again! I wish we had the garden pots and accessory options in Canada that y’all have in the UK and that vintage galvanized troughs and buckets were more widely available. Detroit Garden Works is one of the best North American retailers of garden accessories and they get most of their accessories and vintage galvanized metal from the UK. The past 2 years I’ve invested more in pots. I have fibrecrete pots that stay out all year, a lovely large terracotta pot that like the olive tree in it must come inside, and ceramic pots (1 special handmade pot for floating flowers, and a bunch of decent glazed pots that could have come straight from my mom’s 1970s living room) that also come inside. Following Jo Thompson’s suggestion, I sourced heavy weight 15 liter galvanized buckets — much to my surprise, I found the best quality and price at Canadian Tire. They are now filled with bulbs for spring, covered in chicken wire to keep out the squirrels, and overwintering on my galvanized steel stock tank (flipped over for winter). It doesn’t look as nice as vintage, but I know from my experience with the tank that they’ll lose their shine over winter.
Thank you very much for reading and the great comment. I have a friend who is an antiques and vintage dealer that exports an awful lot of his galvanised dolly tubs to the USA. There is a demand for them but as you say, still hard to find. Yes, the new galvanised finish will eventually oxidise and fade to that lovely dusty grey patina. Good work on those spring bulbs. It's already been the worse year ever for rodent damage and we're only in January! Best wishes, Elliott
