From the very first cuts, to the very first harvest! Welcome to a brand new series all about my Kitchen Garden and how to grow gorgeous, tasty, healthy, organic vegetables. It’s easier than you might imagine. Autumn and Spring are perfect times to begin a new garden. We’re starting from scratch, clearing a derelict space, making it ready for veggies!
Wow, this is a beautiful transformation. And such a wealth of information you shared. Thank you! I am attempting a vegetable garden again this year and I need no dig in my red clay soil in Kentucky badly. Thank you so much for all the resources and happy spring. I’m happy to follow along! 💚
Thank you so much for reading and your lovely comment. Very much appreciated. I really hope it helps with that clay! Charles (from whom I learned almost everything) pioneered this no-dig approach on clay soil so I am very hopeful!
Yes! I read much of his post on his no dig method. I’m incredibly hopeful and inspired. We have a local organic soil maker here and it produces incredible results for my flowers.
Thank you! This is definitely a relatable endeavor. I find that I have an abundance of quality compost from our farm compost heap, but sometimes it seems like the soil isn't breaking down as crumbly and nice as I'd like it to. It's "well cooked" before we add it, but still seems... off. I haven't quite figured out what we're doing wrong. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for reading! I'm envious! I wish I had an abundance! :-)
How long do you leave the heap for? It usually takes a good year or more for farmyard sources, otherwise it can be too 'hot' and too much ammonia. It can also be a moisture issue. I keep my compost heaps covered to keep out the rain. Just some thoughts.
A lovely write-up. I appreciate the app suggestions. Also, path planning is so important!
For many readers, availability of affordable quality compost is a key limitation. We live in rural Ohio and I've learned to make my own soil at scale in large part to fill this gap (we do have almost infinite mulch and leaves here).
Thank you very much. Yes, it can be an issue. When I made the Flower Garden, it was the middle of Covid and supplies were scarce as anybody that had a garden wanted to be in it doing something. That’s when I began making my own compost.

That sounds wonderful! You're very lucky!

The garden is terrific, but your story may be even better 😊
In what way?
The telling of it is great
Thank you! 😊
Thanks, really nejoyed this and lots to learn from it, too
Thank you so much for reading! So glad to hear you enjoyed it!
What a transformation, very impressive and just how quickly you were harvesting is fantastic.
Thank you very much Craig! Yes it was amazing!
